Patriots Draft Ja’Whaun Bentley, LB

Published

on

They finally made a pick.

After yet more trades down in the 2018 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots finally made a selection to address the second level of their defense. New England drafted linebacker Ja’Whaun Bentley from Purdue.

Bentley is an interesting pick, in the mold of current Patriots linebacker Dont’a Hightower. He is best described as a two-down thumper of a linebacker, able to play downhill in the box against the run. He is quick to key and diagnose on running plays and takes good angles to the ball carrier, whether on th playside or on the backside. He also shows the upper body strength to stack and shed blockers in the hole or at the point of attack. Bentley can also be utilized on passing downs as a sub-package interior rusher or blitzer. If there is a weakness, it is in the coverage aspects of playing the position. he might lack the pure quickness and footspeed to stay on running backs and tight ends in man coverage situations, so that could limit him schematically.

Stay tuned for more analysis of the New England Patriots’ 2018 NFL Draft.
